2. SELLS BROTHERS & S.H. BARRETT'S POSTER:
This poster combines two circus companies together and features a girl feeding "midget cattle" advertised as from the exotic Pacific Islands of Upolu or Samoa. The poster says they are believed to be the only living specimens on an extinct race, each under 24 inches in height and less than 90 pounds. the onlookers appear spellbound by the animals. Very fine crayon work went into this poster which allowed for rich deep colors and subtle shadings. This poster highlights the educational aspects circuses used to play, often giving children their first look at animals they had never seen before from far away lands. The poster also highlights the family entertainment value of the circus. The bottom of the poster says Roman Hippodrome, 3-Ring Circus, Elevated Stage, and 5 Continent Menagerie. The original poster was made in 1890 and was published by Strobridge Litho Company.
