Description
The ritual Buddhist bell represents the female principle of perfect wisdom, which directly comprehends emptiness (shunyata). The vajra and the bell are the two main ritual accessories that symbolize the perfection of the method, or skillful means (vajra), and wisdom, or emptiness (bell). During practice, the vajra is held in the right hand, and the bell in the left, which means the indivisible union of method and wisdom. The bell symbolizes the proclaiming sound of emptiness, which arises from the infinite voidness of the form, spreads in all directions and is again dissolved in the silence of the void. His cavity, or “mouth”, is emptiness, and his tongue is form.
