    Saguaro boots are from the saguaro cactus. The saguaro cactus is the 'ambassador' of the Sonoran Desert. It is called a 'boot' because if it is laid lengthwise it somewhat might resemble a shoe or foot.
    Boots are formed when any animal causes damage by chopping out the flesh of the saguaro. The cactuses natural response against this assault is to seep out a liquid. This liquid hardens into a substance which protects the saguaro from infection similar to a person developing a scab. This protective layer becomes the hardest anatomy of the saguaro and is the last to succumb to natural decomposition.
    The animal most responsible for these boots is the Gila Woodpecker. They chop out a nesting cavity. Other animals will reuse these cavities over the years. And the internal temperature may be in the 80's when it is 110 outside.
    Saguaro boots are very collectable and are a status symbol in many Sonoran Desert homes.
    This boot is large and is an excellent specimen. The opening is very nicely formed. Saguaros have an inner ring of ribs which reinforce the cactus. Larger boots, like this one, have channels on the back of the boot the show where the 'scab' once formed around these ribs. The ribs have since disintegrated away while their outlines remain in the boot.
    One other point. This is an excellent boot. But, there are some very thin layers to it. These may flake off in small amounts, especially when handled or jostled. When I ship this, you may receive it with a few small pieces in the wrapping pieces. This is unavoidable and is the nature of the piece. Just handle this with gentle care and it will last for many years to come.
