    Description

Beautiful set of seven handmade and hand painted large rimmed ceramic plates or platters, dated 1956, and each signed by the artist, Mel. Six individually hand painted plates showcase a native plant from the Sonoran Desert of our country’s southwest, and one very special plate is painted with the spirit of the Southwest. Each plate is signed by its maker, “Mel” and each desert plant identified under the painting. They are an elegant and certainly unique tribute to the beauty of our American Southwest.
The plates measure just over 10 ½” across and I believe they are hand-thrown on a pottery wheel rather than slip poured into a mold. Though they are certainly the work of a master-potter, some have higher interior rims on the flat part of the plate than others. Some of the plates have been used and some look brand-new (unused would be more accurate, as this set has been in the owner’s family, themselves third-generation Arizonans, for at least the last seven decades). Each of the seven plates weighs about 1 lb, 15 ounces, so would be strong enough for outdoor events, barbeques, or dinner parties.
One of the plates has light scoring into the glaze such as a steak knife would make (the ocotillo), and another has a chip out of the rim, which was replaced and two smaller nicks out of the rim (the century plant). A couple show light crazing of the glaze, which is not a fault and in this case, only enhances the plates’ attractiveness. The others are in remarkably good condition and would be the feature of any table.
It is the depictions of the desert plants that is so enthralling. Each one is beautifully rendered in black and white and different colors for the flowers, each with its name, and glazed both front and back with the artist’s signature on the back of each one. Six are desert plants and the seventh is a fanciful flight of phoenix-birds on the front, and on the back is painted “Hand Painted by Mel” followed by “’56” and another fanciful bird-figure.
These remarkable plates show a great love of the ecoregion covering large parts of Arizona and California and extending down to northwester Mexico in Sonora, Baja California and Baja California Sur.
These are local pickup in Kissimmee, FL only.
