Ed Pillar (August 27, 1905-June 17, 1987) acquired his "horse sense" early in life, which helped make a success of everything he later attempted, from shining shoes to selling cars and horse training. Although horses had always been a part of his life, Pillar had his sights set on a very special horse, a dancing horse. At the age of 40, this dream was realized.
A chance meeting with expert dressage trainer, Austin Smith, was a dream come true for Pillar. The two formed a partnership to show their pair of dancing horses, the King of Diamonds and the Queen of Hearts, all over the country. Eventually they added other acts to their stable. In 1952, Ed’s trained mule, Pinky, performed for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Pillar’s interests ranged far beyond horses. He was a self-taught musician and organized an award-winning barbershop quartet, which sang for years around the Scotland area. His gift for gab and fine speaking voice made him much in demand as an announcer for nearly every occasion in the area. He was also instrumental in building an authentic stagecoach for the nation’s Bicentennial.
Through his own enjoyment of his horses, cars and music, Ed extended himself to provide many hours of pleasure for others.
Inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 1983
